This corresponds to Better Cities release v6.0.7 Some files and folders listed below may be found in the Update Archive rather than the Main Archive

Better Cities Main Archive

Files in folders beginning with 00, 01 or 02 are the primary files for BC.
Files in folders beginning with 03, 04 or 05 are tweaks to BC, affecting very specific parts of the mod.
Files in folders beginning with 06 are intended to try to improve FPS in games where using BC causes the game to run too slowly to play. Weaker computers or heavily modded games might need these.
Files in folders beginning with 10 are integration files. These are NOT patches, these do NOT deal with compatibility conflicts. Instead, they allow BC to integrate with special features found with other mods so that BC content can work with those special features smoothly.
Files in folders beginning with 20 or 21 are replacer files. These are NOT patches, but they do deal with compatibility conflicts. The original mod should be installed fully, but instead of using the ESP(s) from the original mod, our versions replace the original ESP(s).
Files in folders beginning with 30 or 31 are patch files. These deal with compatibility conflicts, and require that the original mod be installed fully, including the ESP(s) from the original mod.
Files in folders 20 and 30 are not to be used with Open Cities Reborn, unless noted otherwise below. Any reference below to Open Cities Reborn relates to using Better Cities with Open Cities Reborn, not Open Cities Reborn on its own.
Files in folders 21 and 31 are for the Imperial City only and will work with Open Cities Reborn.


\00 Core\

Required - Better Cities Resources.esm
This is the base file from which the entire Better Cities (aka BC) mod runs. Absolutely everything in this mod requires the ESM, the game will not even start if you try to use part of BC without using the ESM.
Contains almost all of our base records, all our interiors, most quests, scripts, dialogue, NPCs and AI packages.

OptionalBetter Cities Helper.dll
OptionalBetter Cities Helper.ini
Requires OBSE v20+ otherwise it will do absolutely nothing. These two files are an attempt to resolve the rare issue some gamers have where doors which Better Cities has disabled keep getting enabled again. This plugin checks which parts of Better Cities are installed and will only make changes in-game if you are using the parts of Better Cities which require it.

\01 Better Cities\

If you use any one or more of the following files, do NOT use Better Cities Full.esp from the 01 Better Cities Full folder.
Do not use any of these with Open Cities Reborn.

  • Better Cities Anvil.esp
  • Better Cities Bravil.esp
  • Better Cities Bruma.esp
  • Better Cities Cheydinhal.esp
  • Better Cities Chorrol.esp
  • Better Cities Leyawiin.esp
  • Better Cities Skingrad.esp

Each of these overhauls only the single specific city as listed in the filename.
If you want to use every single city, then rather than use all these files, you could instead use the merged ESP from the 01 Better Cities Full folder.

\01 Better Cities Full\

If you use the following file, do NOT use any of the files from the 01 Better Cities folder, and do NOT use Better Cities Open Cities Reborn.esp This ESP contains every one of the non-IC individual cities merged together.

\01 Open Cities Reborn\

  • Better Cities - Open Cities Reborn.esp

Requires Open Cities Reborn.esp from another mod named Open Cities Reborn - the game will not even start otherwise.
This ESP is especially designed to work with Open Cities Reborn, adding our buildings and NPCs into the redesigned cities from Open Cities Reborn. This is a replacer ESP for the rest of the Better Cities ESPs.
This does not include our integrated Blood & Mud content – you will still need to install Blood & Mud separately along with Arthmoor’s compatibility patch.
This does not include our integrated Cyrodiil Rebuild content.

  • Better Cities - Open Cities Reborn B&M Compatibility.esp

Requires Open Cities Reborn.esp from another mod named Open Cities Reborn.
Requires Blood&Mud.esp from another mod named Blood & Mud.
Requires Better Cities - Open Cities Reborn.esp
This ESP should only be used if Better Cities – Open Cities Reborn.esp is installed, and if Blood&Mud.esp is installed. Small changes are made to ensure that all these mods work together.

\02 Better Imperial City Full\

If you use the following file, do NOT use any of the IC files from the 02 Better Imperial Districts folder.

This ESP contains every one of the individual IC District ESPs from the 02 Imperial Districts folder merged together.

If you use any one or more of the following files, do NOT use Better Imperial City.esp from the 02 Better Imperial City Full folder

  • Better Cities IC Arcane University.esp
  • Better Cities IC Arena.esp
  • Better Cities IC Elven Gardens.esp
  • Better Cities IC Green Emperor Way.esp

Each of these overhauls only the single specific District of the Imperial City (aka IC) as listed in the filename. These can be used in any combination, and as many or as few as desired.
If you want to use every single IC District, then rather than use all these files, you could instead use the merged ESP from the 01 Better Imperial City Full folder.

\03 Leyawiin Flooded\

Optional - Better Cities - Leyawiin Flooded.esp
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Leyawiin.esp
With this ESP, the water in the eastern district of Leyawiin will be raised as originally designed by Bananasplit, and boardwalk pathways will be enabled.
If you have toggled Leyawiin to be Open, then this file is not needed at all, the Open version of Leyawiin cannot be flooded due to game engine limitations.

\04 View When Distant IC\

Optional - Better Cities - VWD of the IC.esp
ONLY use this if you are certain that your computer can handle a severe hit to FPS. Disable if the game becomes sluggish when near or when looking at the Imperial City from afar. Intended for use with Better Imperial City.esp
With this ESP, every new building and tree which BC adds to the IC Districts will be visible from outside the city walls (whether you can see them over the walls depends upon where you are). If you use a mod like Really Almost Everything Visible When Distant or similar, then these buildings will also all be visible when viewed from afar. You will also need to run TES4LODGen to actually make the buildings visible when distant, the ESP merely places the building for TES4LODGen to detect them.
NOT recommended for heavily modded games, but should be great for taking screenshots.

\05 Open Better Cities\

Optional - Better Cities - Open Better Cities.esp
ONLY use this if you intend to toggle one or more cities to be Open.
Do NOT use this with Open Cities Reborn.
With this ESP, NPCs from the original game who live in the cities (excluding the Imperial City) will be given additional AI packages so that they will correctly respond to a city being toggled Open. Edits are also made to the doors within the buildings in each city so they will work correctly when the city is toggled Open. Some other edits to quests and scripts from the original game which are required to ensure a city toggles Open correctly are included as well. These edits will be completely ignored if the related city is not toggled Open, so don't worry if you only want to toggle some of the cities Open, that's fine.
If you have no intention at all of toggling any city Open, then this file is not needed.


\06 FPS Patches\

Optional - Better Imperial City FPS Patch.esp
Optional - Better Cities IC Waterfront FPS Patch.esp
ONLY use one of these, and only if you are using either Better Imperial City.esp or Better Cities IC Waterfront.esp.
These ESPs remove clutter and plants from the IC Waterfront District, in an attempt to improve FPS.
Do not install these unless you need them, as they detract from the intended appearance of the Waterfront.

\07 IC Imperial Isle\

Optional - Better Cities - IC Imperial Isle.esp
This ESP adds the outer walls for the Aristocratic District to the Tamriel worldspace, raising the land height to match that found when within the district. The Arena District walls are extended to match the changes within the district. The aqueduct is added linking the Imperial Isle to the mainland, and the quest to restore the city’s water supply is enabled.
These edits are kept in a separate optional ESP so that if other mods conflict you can simply disable these changes without losing the actual city content.
You will need to run TES4LODGen to make the aqueduct Visible When Distant, otherwise it will just be cut off at the border of the furthest-loaded cell in your game.

\10 Cobl\

Optional - Better Cities - COBL.esp
Requires Cobl Main.esm from another mod named Cobl - the game will not even start otherwise.
This is an integration file, not a patch, and is NOT required if you use Cobl. Some items added by BC are also found in Cobl, this ESP will tell the game to treat identical objects from each mod as the same, so they will stack together, and if a quest makes use of the item, then it won't matter which mod the items come from.
Also with this ESP, the wells added by BC to each city can be used as a source of drinking water if you use the survival parts of Cobl.

\10 Enhanced Economy\

Optional - Better Cities - House Price Patch.esp
Requires Enhanced Economy.esp from another mod named Enhanced Economy - the game will not even start otherwise.
This is an integration file, not a patch, and is NOT required if you use Enhanced Economy. With this ESP, the cost of purchasing the Bravil Riverside Shack will increase to match the pricing scale of the five different “Enhanced Economy - House prices.esp” which come with Enhanced Economy. If you are not using any of the House prices ESPs from Enhanced Economy, this integration file will not change anything in your game.

\10 MOBS\

Optional - Better Cities - MOBS.esp
Requires MOBS.esp from another mod named MOBS (Medieval Oblivion Equipment Balance System).
This is an integration file, not a patch, and is NOT required if you use MOBS. With this ESP, BC weapons will have their stats adjusted to fit with the changes made by MOBS to weapons from the original game.

\10 Storms and Sound\

Optional - Better Cities - Storms & Sound.esp
Requires Storms & Sounds.esp from another mod named Storms & Sounds – the game will not even start otherwise.
This is an integration file, not a patch, and is NOT required if you use Storms & Sound. With this ESP, all BC interiors will reflect the sounds of storms outside.

\10 TIE\

Optional - Better Cities - TIE Restricted Area.esp
Requires TIE.esp from another mod named Tamriel Immersion Experience - the game will not even start otherwise.
This is an integration file, not a patch, and is NOT required if you use TIE. TIE marks various locations to interiors from the original game where if the player enters them, an NPC nearby will complain and ask you to move away (the same as when you trespass, but instead of affecting the entire interior, it might affect just the area behind the counter in a shop). This ESP marks similar locations to interiors from BC.

\20 Against the Zealots of the Nine\

Optional - JolardHome.esp
Requires the resources from the mod Against the Zealots of the Nine.
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Cheydinhal.esp
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod Against the Zealots of the Nine, which makes edits in Cheydinhal which conflict with BC. This replacer file relocates the house which was added inside Cheydinhal to a location just outside Cheydinhal, south of the city west gate.
This replacer works with Open Cities Reborn.

\20 Clocks of Cyrodiil\

Optional - ClocksOfCyrodiil.esp
Requires the resources from the mod Clocks of Cyrodiil.
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod Clocks of Cyrodiil, which makes edits to every city and every IC District, most of which conflict with BC. This replacer file moves clocks in each city and IC District so that they no longer conflict with BC. The newly located clocks are also positioned so that they still look right even when BC is not used, and also works with Open Cities: Outer Districts.

\20 Slofs Goth Shop\

Optional - Slof's Oblivion Goth Shop.esp
Requires the resources from the mods Slof's Goth Shop 1 and Goth Shop 2.
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Chorrol.esp
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mods Goth Shop 1 and Goth Shop 2, which make edits to Chorrol which conflict with BC. This replacer file combines both of Sloth's Goth Shops into one, and relocates the shop entrance to the BC-added Old Prison area of Chorrol.
This replacer works with Open Cities Reborn.

\20 Vaults Of Cyrodiil\

Optional - VaultsofCyrodiilBC.esp
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Leyawiin.esp
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod Vaults Of Cyrodiil, which makes edits to Leyawiin which conflict with BC. This replacer file repositions an entry to the Leyawiin vault slightly so that it doesn't conflict with the BC-added south harbour.
This replacer works with Open Cities Reborn.

\21 ICExpand\

OptionalICEXPAND.esp
Requires the resources from the mod ICExpand.
ONLY use this if you are using any part of Better Imperial City.
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod IC Expand, which adds a vast network of underground districts and rooms beneath the Imperial City, linked from each Imperial City District and conflicting with almost every BC District. This replacer file adjusts the entrances so they no longer conflict.

\21 Mystery of the Dulan Cult\

Optional - The Mystery of the Dulan cult.esp
Requires the resources from the mod The Mysteries of the Dulan Cult.
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod The Mysteries of the Dulan Cult, which makes edits to the IC Market District which conflict with BC. This replacer file moves conflicting objects so that they no longer conflict. As the original mod contains some game-breaking bugs and our version fixes these bugs, it is recommended to use our replacer even if you are not using any part of BC which conflicts.

\21 Old Crow Inn\

Optional - OldCrowInn.esp
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities IC Market.esp, Better Imperial City.esp
This is a replacer file, not a patch, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod The Old Crow Inn, which makes edits to the IC Market District which conflict with BC. This replacer file removes the conflicting objects. The shop "Corthio's Curiosities" from The Old Crown Inn is integrated into BC already, so this replacer files adds the quests and the wilderness locations.


\21 Scribe Supplies\

ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities IC Market.esp, Better Imperial City.esp
Never use both of these together, only ever pick one if you want either.
These are replacer files, not patches, and should only be installed if you are already using, or wish to install the mod Scribe Supplies, which makes edits to the IC Market District which conflict with BC. The actual shop from Scribe Supplies is integrated into BC, so if you just want the new shop you don't need either of these files. In addition, Scribe Supplies adds scribing implements to merchants throughout the game. These replacer files include the edits to other merchants from the original game.
If you install BC using our OMOD install script, these files will be renamed to Scribe Supplies.esp

\30 All Natural\

Optional - Better Cities - All Natural.esp plus the Meshes and Textures folders
Requires All Natural Base.esm and All Natural.esp from another mod named All Natural - the game will not even start otherwise.
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Bruma.esp, Better Cities Chorrol.esp, Better Cities Skingrad
This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Bruma, Chorrol and Skingrad chapels between BC and the mod All Natural.
This conflict does not exist with Open Cities Reborn.

\30 Alternative Start Arrive by Ship\

ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Leyawiin.esp
This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Leyawiin between BC and the mod Alternative Start Arrive by Ship. The Leyawiin alternative start location has been moved to the deck of a ship, and the traveller’s sack can be seen immediately in front and slightly to the right of where you arrive.

\30 CUO Bravil\

This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Anvil Bay and Chorrol between BC and the mod Dark Brotherhood Chronicles: Awakening. The patch will check which parts of BC you have active, and will only patch the locations it needs to.

This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Bravil between BC and the mod FCOM – specifically it ensures that vanilla NPCs which Better Cities edits in Bravil have their statistics match those from FCOM to reduce the chance of them being killed by the tougher bandits and creatures added by FCOM outside the city walls.
This conflict does not exist with Open Cities Reborn.

\30 Halcyon Island\

Requires Halcyon Island.esp from another mod named Halcyon Island - the game will not even start otherwise.
ONLY use this if you are using one of the following files: Better Cities Full.esp, Better Cities Anvil.esp
This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Anvil Bay between BC and the mod Halcyon Island.
Do not use with Halcyon Island_lowconflict.esp which has a greater conflict than Halcyon Island.esp.

\30 Immersive Interiors\

This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Chorrol chapel between BC and the mod Immersive Interiors.
This conflict does not exist with Open Cities Reborn.

This is a compatibility patch, resolving the conflicts in Anvil between BC and the official DLC Knights of the Nine when Anvil is toggled Open. Not needed if Anvil is not toggled Open.
