Clean Save Procedure

>> Note: A more extensive version of this procedure is detailed on the UESP Wiki if you encounter issues.

If the mod doesn't make any environmental changes or your character is already in a location that is not affected by the mod, then follow these steps:

  1. Disable or remove the mod.
  2. Launch Oblivion and load a saved game.
  3. Tell the game to continue when prompted about missing content.
  4. Save the game in a new slot.
  5. Exit the game.

The new saved game is your "clean save".

If the mod makes environmental changes like Better Cities or any of the Open Cities mods, then follow these steps:

  1. Launch Oblivion and load a saved game.
  2. Move your character to a location that is not affected by the mod. If you are uncertain, you can move your character to the Testing Hall. See the instructions below.
  3. Save your game in a new slot.
  4. Disable or remove the mod.
  5. Launch Oblivion and load a saved game.
  6. Tell the game to continue when prompted about missing content.
  7. Save the game in a new slot (another new slot, not the one you used previously).
  8. Exit the game.

Moving your Character to the Testing Hall

The Testing Hall is a special cell created by Bethesda for testing various aspects of the game. It is a safe location that is rarely altered by mods.

  1. Launch Oblivion and load a saved game.
  2. Open the console and type "coc testinghall" without the quotes.

Your character is now in the Testing Hall. You can continue with the clean save procedure. Once you have finished fixing your load order, load up your saved game and open the console. Type "coc weye" to return your character to Tamriel. Weye is the little village just outside the Imperial City and is a convenient location to return your character to Tamriel.
